John's Volunteer Journey

In 2020, I was a Creative Writing graduate who had moved home and was unemployed. So, I decided to volunteer at the Brentwood Theatre as an usher to reconnect with my love for the arts and contribute to my local community.

What I’ve most come to love about my role as a volunteer is the people I work with. I always look forward to my shifts knowing I get to do work I find fulfilling whilst surrounded by creative people equally passionate about the arts. Seeing shows for free is a nice perk, too!

Volunteering with the theatre has built up my confidence in my abilities, done wonders for my mental health and has made me feel like a valuable member of the community. It’s also helped me find paid work.

Putting myself forward as a volunteer has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had and remains the best decision I’ve made since moving back home.

Toni’s Volunteer Journey

I came to Brentwood twenty one years ago at the age of fifty two directly from Paris. I heard about volunteering and thought it would be a good idea to meet people and make friends. I started volunteering at Age Concern Brentwood, little did I know how much my life would change through Volunteering. I always think the little I give I get back a thousand fold. I have made some solid friendships and lifelong friends. Volunteering brings so much fun into my life and it makes me happy seeing other people happy.

Kieran’s Volunteer Journey

I must say, volunteering has been a real eye-opener for me. My first thought was ‘why give up my free time?’ but now it makes a lot more sense to me. I’ve noticed that my confidence has received a huge boost. Being put into situations where I’ve had to talk to all sorts of new people and having the opportunity to take on responsibilities I never thought I would be able to handle has really made me step up.

Through my time volunteering, I have picked up so much, especially from older volunteers who have more experience. I’ve learned everything from teamwork to problem-solving and even soft skills like empathy and patience. It’s really helped me grow as not only a future employee, but a person as well.

Also, having volunteering on my CV will show to future employers that my knowledge isn’t limited to information on a textbook and an exam grade, instead I will also have knowledge of a real working environment. It’s going to give me a serious advantage over others as I figure out what to do after A-Levels.

All in all, choosing to volunteer has easily been one of the best decisions I have ever made, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.
